Colca Canyon / Arequipa

After getting up early, we headed to the Colca Canyon, the best place to see the endangered Andean Condor - the largest land bird in the Western Hemisphere.

The Colca Canyon is one of the largest canyons in the world - twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, with scenery to match. At the Condor Cross - the best viewpoing - tourists gather to catch a glimpse of the elusive bird with a 3 metre wingspan, soaring more than 1000m over the Colca river.

Seeing the massive birds was truly awe-inspiring; its impossible to imagine just how big they are without seeing them firsthand. On the other hand, the canyon, while beautiful, wasnt that impressive for me - it was big, but it was more of a steep valley than an actual "canyon"; I had imagined steep cliffs, like at the Grand Canyon.

After an hour or so of Condor-watching, the group set out on a straightforward hour-long huke along the canyon - some stunning scenery again, especially with the snow-topped mountains in the distance.

Following another buffet lunch, we returned to Arequipa for the evening where I immediately started organising dinner. I knocked up a simple Spaghetti Carbonara - everyone seemed happy enough but I found it dry and underseasoned - we didnt buy enough cream or any pepper, and the only cream available was tinned, condensed stuff.
